LEH, June 22: An Army motorcycle expedition to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas was flagged off from here by Lt Gen YK Joshi, GOC Fire & Fury Corps, a Defence Ministry spokesperson said here today.
The unique expedition celebrates the victory of Indian Army in the 1999 Kargil war and also aims to connect with the ‘Veer Naris’ and the Next of Kin (NOK) all along the route of the expedition, in the year, which the Army has designated as the ‘Year of NOK’.
Comprising of six young riders, led by Capt Shaunak Bhate and Capt Vishnu Nair from the Sahas aur Yogyata Regiment (Fire & Fury Sappers), the expedition would cover seven states and 3150 km, with an aim to celebrate the Indian Army’s spirit for adventure, starting from the high altitude city of Leh and traverse through the heart of the country down south to Ahmedabad.
In keeping with it’s stated objectives, the expedition has been named ‘Veterans & Next of Kins (NoK) Outreach’ and ‘Know your Army’ Motorcycle Expedition. The team would touch the states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
From high altitude areas of eastern Ladakh and hills of Nainital and Almora, the expedition, flagged off on Friday, would cross the Indian Heartland in the plains, where maximum of the Veteran community resides.
The expedition plans to establish a connect with the veterans of the Army, NoK, youth as well as all Army formations en-route between the Northern and Southern Commands of the Army.
They would also interact with the youth in a number of schools and colleges enroute to refresh their memory and remind them of the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces, during the Kargil War.
The youth would be shown motivational movies, giving motivational talks and handed over information pamphlets, on how to join the Indian Army.
The expedition is scheduled to start its interaction with schools and colleges from DAV College Chandigarh, the college of late Capt Vikram Batra, PVC (Posthumous), and aims to interact with 12 schools and four colleges en-route.
