MIER organizes health awareness session on breast cancer

JAMMU, Jan 29: The Shrimati Shanti Gupta Centre for Women’s Studies, MIER College (Autonomous), conducted a health awareness session on the theme “Breast Cancer: Awareness, Prevention and Treatment.”
The session featured Dr Surbhi Kudyar, Associate Surgical Oncologist at the American Oncology Institute, Jammu, as the resource person. Dr Renu Gupta, Chairperson of the MIER Group of Institutions, and Prof Adit Gupta, Director, and Principal of MIER College, were also present at the event.
Almita Katoch, Gender Champion, introduced Dr Surbhi Kudyar who is an expert in Breast Oncoplasty and Breast Carcinoma, currently leading research on breast cancer trends in Jammu and Kashmir, focusing on pre- and post-menopausal statuses, age-related factors, receptor studies, and surgical outcomes.
Dr Kudyar provided an in-depth overview of breast cancer, emphasizing the importance of awareness and early detection. She discussed factors contributing to the disease, such as lifestyle choices, dietary habits, and excessive caffeine intake. The presentation also covered common symptoms, including lumps in the breast, changes in breast shape or size, and unusual discharge. She highlighted the importance of regular self-examinations, timely medical consultations, and a multidisciplinary approach to treatment and recovery.
Prof Adit Gupta, in his address, said that the awareness session reflects the institute’s dedication to the health and well-being of women, encouraging them to adopt healthier lifestyles and stay vigilant about their health.
Rupa Gupta, Director of the Centre, said that breast cancer remains a significant health concern, and initiatives like this aim to break the silence, foster awareness, and educate individuals about prevention and treatment.”
The session saw enthusiastic participation from students of the School of Education, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, and faculty members. The interactive discussion provided attendees with the opportunity to address their queries and concerns directly with the expert.
The program was conducted by Hitakshi Bakshi, Gender Champion, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Unmesh Kant. The event was organized under the guidance of Dr Bharti Tandon, Deputy Head of the School of Education and Convener, along with Jyoti Sharma, a member of the Centre for Women’s Studies.
