SRINAGAR, Oct 1: Scripting a huge win by 126 runs over Dr Ram Manohar Lohia University (RMLU), Faizabad in the summit clash, the Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak lifted the title trophy of the North Zone Inter-University Women`s Cricket Tournament 2012 at Kashmir University Campus ground, here.
Earlier, electing to bat first, MDU Rothak scored 185 runs in stipulated 30 overs, while in reply, RMLU Faziabad bundled out for a paltry total of 59 runs, thus losing the match by a big margin of 126 runs. Jyoti Sharma was declared woman of the match for her brilliant contribution of 56 runs and taking 2 wickets for just 2 runs. Jasia Akhter emerged highest run getter of the tournament, while Elizabeth Maqbool remained the highest wicket taker.
Minister for Higher Education, Abdul Gani Malik was chief guest on the occasion and distributed prizes among the winners and runners up teams.
Minister said that such tournaments are important platform for youngsters to prove and hone their potential in the field of sports.
“We should make every effort to organise such tournaments in near future so that we can easily identify the talent,” said AG Malik.
He added that Sports is an important means to promote tourism in the Valley as participants get exposed to the beauty of the Valley.
While presiding over the closing ceremony Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof Talat Ahmad, said that winning or losing are just the ingredients of the game, “the matter of importance is the participation and one should accept the result whatever it turns out to be with great spirit.”
Director Youth Services and Sports, Jaipal Singh, Registrar Kashmir University, Prof S Fayaz Ahmad, Director Kashmir Studies Prof Sidiq Wahid and several other officials from Youth Services and Sports and Physical Education Department of University of Kashmir were also present on the occasion.
In his address, Prof Bashir Ahmad, organizing secretary and Director Physical Education & Sports KU, said that this tournament was first of its kind and would benefit women in the long run.
The Tournament was organized by Directorate of Physical Education, Kashmir University in which 20 teams from North India participated.
