SRINAGAR, Sept 16: Police arrested a martial art player and her two accomplices after she attacked and injured Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council (JKSC), Nuzhat Gul in her office yesterday.
The Secretary has suffered serious injuries on her neck when faced a sudden attack from Nighat Bashir who claims to be an international martial art player. She also ransacked the office of the Secretary and used foul language against the entire staff of the JKSC.
Nuzhat Gul told Excelsior that Nighat entered the office of the JKSC while shooting from her mobile phone the conversation she had with her and the staff.
She said that Nighat, who claims to be a Karate player, made a forceful entry into the office and then entered into verbal dual, followed by attack on her.
“I was surprised to see such a behaviour from a female athlete, who claims to be an international medal winner. I just asked her to stop abusing my staff and she caught me from the neck. I am thankful to my colleagues that they have saved me from something life threatening,” she said.
Nighat, who has practiced multiple martial arts and has got medals in different disciplines, wanted the JKSC officials to endorse her achievements, which the concerned official refused and in turn asked her to come through proper channel.
“I told her that the Sports Council has no role in awarding or approving the certificates of an athlete. It is the concerned sports associations, who endorse and authenticate the certificates to be used for different purposes. I also told her we are not authorised to do so,” she said.
“When she didn’t stop filming, I snatched her phone and she caught hold of me. She told me that she will kill me and go to jail. We lodged a complaint with police”, she said.
A case has been registered in his regard under FIR No 83 of 2021 U/S 332 of IPC at Women’s Police Station Srinagar.
Nuzhat said that the Nighat has played through unrecognised association and has not played through Sports Council so JKSC can’t award any certificate to her.
In the meantime, a group of athletes protested here today against the assault on the Secretary, calling for a ban on the unrecognized sports associations of Valley.
A group of athletes gathered at the Press Enclave here to show support for Nuzhat Gul. They condemned the incident and demanded that unrecognized associations, players, and sports be banned in the Valley to prevent such incidents. “We are protesting the incident and demanding stern action against the player,” an athlete, Faisal Shafi said.
