JALANDHAR, Mar 3: Sportspersons of Lovely Professional University (LPU) have emerged as ‘Overall Champions’ among nation’s all Private Universities in first ever edition of the University Students’ prestigious sports competition ‘Khelo India University Games-2020’.
LPU won a big haul of 23 meda, with 9 Gold, 6 Silver and 8 Bronze Medals and was ranked 6th among 96 participating Universities from all across India.
Around 3500 University students of the country had battled for glory in a wide range of sporting events of international magnitude. LPU has trounced strong-footed Government and Private Universities like Universities of Mumbai, Madras, Delhi, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and more.
Concluded on 1st March 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the competitions in the month of February 2020 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, and had exhorted the athletes to better their performances.
The first ever edition of ‘Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2020’ competitions came to a conclusion by crowning the winners of the inaugural edition.
The university students were given a platform to put their talents on display and top in a wide 17 range of sporting events including Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Fencing, Judo, Kabaddi, Rugby, Swimming, Table Tennis, Weight-Lifting and Wrestling etc.
LPU students won 2 gold medals in Weightlifting in weight category of 96 kgs and 59 kgs; 3 in Judo in weight category of 100+kgs, 78kgs, 60Kgs; and one each in Wrestling, Boxing, Javelin Throw and Heptathlon.
The gold medal winners included lifters Yumnum Khondonbi Chanu, Gurjeet; Wrestler Rani Rana, Javelin Thrower Shilpa, Judo players Shiva Kumar, Anmol, Ritik Kumar and Boxer Ashutosh.
Congratulating the students on historic win at the inaugural edition of the games, LPU Chancellor Ashok Mittal expressed his wish to see LPU students win top Olympic Medals too.
In fact, KIUG-2020 is the largest ever multi-discipline sports event conducted for University students, and is the best platform to unearth the talented sportspersons for India.
Panjab University Chandigarh claimed the top honours winning the championship and Savitribai Phule Pune University was declared as the runners-up.
