J&K’s Sumitpal lifts title in tennis nationals

JAMMU, Aug 17: Defeating second seed Vikas Singh of West Bengal in hard-fought summit clash by two sets to one (2-1) by (5-7,6-2, 9-7), the young tennis player of Jammu and Kashmir, Sumitpal Singh sailed into the finals of the All India Adidas Under-14 Lawn Tennis National Championship at YMCA Complex, Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
Earlier, in the final, Sumitpal was leading by (5-3) in the first set, but Vikas Singh came back strongly to win the set by (7-5). However, Sumitpal showed grit and guts in other two sets and won them back to back by (6-2) and (9-7) respectively. Though, both the players showed anticipation, motor-ability and sharp reflexes, besides displaying the skill of forehand and slice shots, yet it was Sumitpal who held his nerves when it mattered the most to win the final set via tie-breaker by (9-7).
In the first round, Sumitpal defeated Arnold of Tamil Nadu easily in straight sets by (6-0, 6-2), while in the second round, he drubbed Srivatsa Ratakonda of Andhra Pradesh by (6-0,4-6, 6-2) to move into the third round or pre-quarterfinals, wherein Sumitpal thrashed Kabir Manrai of Chandigarh in straight sets by (6-3, 6-2).
In quarterfinals, Sumitpal got better of Dhruv Sunish of Maharashtra, while in the semifinals, he trounced Yougal Bansal of Delhi by (6-3, 6-4) in straight sets to seal berth in the finals.
Meanwhile, in Under-14 girls, another player from Jammu and Kashmir, Prinkle Singh reached semifinals in the doubles event and quarterfinals in the singles event
