JAMMU, Dec 7: Jammu & Kashmir dominated the opening day of the U-16 Men’s Vijay Merchant Trophy at CK Pithawala Ground, Surat, with a superb all-round performance, securing a first innings lead against Arunachal Pradesh.
Arunachal Pradesh, winning the toss and opting to bat first, got off to a cautious start with their openers putting on 23 runs. However, the innings soon collapsed under pressure as Sanil Singh and Jaskaran Singh wreaked havoc with the ball. Arunachal Pradesh was bundled out for a mere 99 runs in 36 overs. Dedu top-scored with 33 runs off 50 balls, while skipper Amos contributed 15. Sanil Singh’s brilliant spell fetched 5 wickets for 21 runs in 9 overs and Jaskaran Singh picked 3 wickets for 13 runs in 7 overs. Tariq Nabi and Rigav Anand claimed a wicket each.
In reply, J&K batted with confidence, reaching 240 for 5 at stumps on day one. Karman Singh showcased exceptional skill and patience, remaining unbeaten on 104 off 167 balls with 18 boundaries. Haadi Amin contributed 39 runs off 50 balls, while Aksh Sharma added 38 off 54 balls. Skipper Smagey Khajuria and Jaskaran Singh chipped in with 17 runs each, consolidating the team’s position.
For Arunachal Pradesh, Haniya and Naman took 2 wickets each, while Zingbo Magung Kino claimed one wicket. J&K’s dominant performance, led by Sanil’s five-wicket haul and Karman’s maiden century, puts them in a commanding position as they look to press for a strong victory in the first round of the prestigious Vijay Merchant Trophy.
