JAMMU, Oct 1: All India Level Rs 3 lakh Total Cash Prize Money J&K Police FIDE Rating Chess Tournament organized by All J&K Chess Association commenced today at Indoor Hall, MA Stadium. The tournament is being sponsored by Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP).
On the occasion, DIG IRP Jammu VS Sambyal was the chief guest, while Divisional Sports Officer Jammu Rajan Sharma was guest of honour. Atul Kumar Gupta, President, All J&K Chess Association, Baldev Raj, vice president and Taranvir Singh Gujral, coordinator, were also present.
Dharmendra Kumar, International Arbiter is the chief Arbiter of this event, while Rajendra Teli, Anil Kotwal and Bindu Pathania, FIDE Arbiters along with three other are extending help for the smooth conduct of the event.
A total of nine rounds will be played in this event, during which 115 players from 15 States of India including Manipur, Assam, Kerala and Maharashtra will participate. Around 60 players from J&K are also participating in the tournament. 75-years-old Mohammad Rafiq bhat is the senior most player of the event while 6-years-old Nandita Khajuria and Divyam Gupta are the youngest players of the event. Cash prizes worth Rs 43,000 are reserved for J&K players.
While speaking on the occasion, DIG VS Sambyal said that this kind of tournaments will not only give local players a platform to express their talent but also channelize their energies in the right direction which is the need of the hour.
