SRINAGAR, May 6: The girls contingent of Jammu and Kashmir brought laurels to the State by winning 500 metre Dragon Boat race and also lifted the Sixth National Dragon Boat Championship held at Bhind, Madhya Pradesh.
The Jammu and Kashmir contingent comprising 20 men and 20 women paddlers participated in 6th National Dragon Boat Championship held at Bhind, MP.
Jammu and Kashmir bagged four medals including one gold, one silver and 2 bronze in the championship.
Twelve girl paddlers who practiced during icy conditions in Dal Lake during winter won gold in 500 metre Dragon Boat race. They also won one silver and bronze in 2000 metres Dragon boat race. The J&K also won bronze in 2000 metres mixed Dragon Boat race.
Athletes from 26 States participated in the championship with Jammu and Kashmir women team lifting the 6th National Dragon Boat Championship.
The Jammu and Kashmir beat teams like Haraya, Punjab, Kerala, Delhi and ITBP which are thought to be strongest teams of the country.
The coach of J&K team Bilquis Mir told Excelsior that it is because of the dedication and hard work that these players have put during last few months under adverse weather conditions in Dal Lake.
Mir who has captained national team at international events is presently coach of Indian Kayaking and Canoeing team. She had conducted three month camp for the players of the State in Dal Lake in freezing weather conditions.
