JAMMU, Dec 2: A quadruple of ace runners from Jammu namely Chandan Gupta, Kunal Chib, Abhishek Naranag and Iqbal Kalra excelled in the prestigious Standard Chartered Singapore Night Marathon by participating in 21 kilometers and 10 kilometers races in the event.
Chandan and Kunal took part in 21 km race (Half Marathon), while Abhishek and Narang participated in 10 kilometers race.
This year’s course took the runners from the FI Pit Building through the Central Business District to places such as West Coast Highway, Marina Barrage, Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands, before ending at the Float.
The event attracted over 15, 000 participants with the overall SCSM competition, which includes a kids’ dash and distances of 21 km, 10 km, 5 km as well as wheel chair category-seeing over 50,000 entrants.
The shift is part of the organisers’ effort to fulfil various criteria in their bid to get the SCSM listed among the Abbott World Marathon Majors, a series of the most prestigious marathons in the world.
The event is held in the nights, otherwise, none of the six Majors namely Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, New York and Tokyo are held at night.
Unlike the previous editions, when the marathon began before dawn, this year’s race was flagged off at 6:05 pm at the FI Pit Building.
Around 100,000 fans along the route cheered to liven up the race. Live performances, food and activities were offered across three dedicated spectator zones-The Promontory, Empress Lawn and The Float.
“It was really great to have the Singaporean public cheering us out there and really enjoyed their support,” said Chandan Gupta.
It is pertinent to mention here that Chandan and Kunal have earlier participated in Half Marathons like Airtel Delhi Half Marathon and Tata Mumbai Half Marathon.
The Half Marathon is a perfect run for those loking to step up from the 10 km and test the long distance disciplines.
