J&K wins 15 medals with 3 gold, 2 silver; Bhanu sparkles on concluding day

JAMMU, Feb 13: Jammu and Kashmir won historic 15 medals, with 3 gold, 2 silver and 10 bronze as Bhanu Pratap clinched Wushu gold on the concluding day of the 35th National Games at Thriruvanan-thapuram in Kerala.
Out of 3 gold medals, apart from Bhanu Pratap, who bagged gold today, the other 2 were bagged by the Gymnasts, with golden girl Palak Kour claiming individual gold and the quartet of Palak, Mitali, Mridul and Pawandeep clinching a team gold.
The two silver medals went to Pardeep Kumar of Wushu and again to Palak of Gymnastics.
Out of the 10 bronze medal won by the State sportspersons, 3 went to Boxing, 2 to Gymnastics, 2 to Wushu and 1 to Water Sports and the winners included Pardeep Sharma, Dheeraj, Anju Bala, Mitali Dogra, Vishal Thappar, Raj Singh Narania, Sandeep Singh and Adil.
Talking to EXCELSIOR, chef-de-mission, HS Gill lauded the efforts of the players alongwith the J&K State Sports Council and Jammu and Kashmir Olympic Association (JKOA) for this landmark achievement.
The State players performed in the presence of HS Gill, SS Gill, Abdul Qayoom and Ashutosh Sharma.
Secretary State Sports Council, Dileep Thussu expressed satisfaction over the performance of the State players and hoped for a better show in the forthcoming events at the national scene.
Meanwhile, Asian Games medallist, Tintu Luka ruled the track on the final day of competitions as she smashed an 18-year-old meet record to win 800m gold before inspiring Kerala to 4x400m top spot in the 35th National Games today, with Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) notching up a hat-trick of overall titles by finishing atop medals table.
SSCB led the tally on account of a higher number of gold medals and emerged as the overall champions for the third time in a row. The team ended with 158 medals (91 gold, 32 silver and 35 bronze), followed by hosts Kerala, who rode on a strong athletics performance to total 161 (54 gold, 46 silver and 61 bronze) and Haryana (39 gold, 40 silver and 27 bronze).
On the final day of competitions, vociferous home supporters filled the athletics ground and Tintu’s star turn made their day.
