JAMMU, Aug 13: As part of Independence Day celebrations, a preliminary horse race competition for Gujjars and Bakkerwals who are residing in higher pastures of Dessa area was organized by Rashtriya Rifles Battalion, under Delta Force.
The competition which will span over a period of four days, started with its preliminary round at an altitude of 10,200 feet in the lush green meadows of Gotul.
Around 320 Gujjars and Bakkerwals participated in the competition, which was witnessed by locals who had gathered from localities from all over Dessa area for this unique event.
The best horse riders will be selected for the finals to be organized on August 15.
The Force also distributed stationery items to the children of Gujjars and Bakkerwals at Sinthan Maidan.
The Rashtriya Rifles based at Bhandarkot had opened up a mobile school for the children of Gujjars and Bakkarwals last month, for which necessary support in terms of stationery items was provided yesterday.
The villagers and civil authority were grateful to Delta Force for instituting such initiatives for Gujjars & Bakkerwals.
