Bindia clinches Lead, Speed Climbing titles; Arun Deep become new speed climbing champion by upsetting Ajay Deep

JAMMU, Aug 14: Bindia Sharma of Udhampur clinched both the Lead and Speed Climbing titles of the 16th J&K State Sport Climbing Championship which concluded at Sprawling Buds School, here.
In a close contest with Ambreen Fatima, a fast upcoming climber, Bindia, the senior most climber of the State, displayed good technique and temperament to win the coveted Lead as well as Speed Climbing titles, whereas Ambreen was runner up in both the events. Shaweta Magotra and Vishali Sharma clinched the third place in Lead and Speed Climbing respectively.
In the Girls category, the results in Lead Climbing as well as Speed Climbing were on expected lines with Shivani, a national champion in Speed Climbing, Shilpa and Nitya Sharma, securing the first three positions in both Lead and Speed Climbing respectively.
Similarly, in the Sub Junior Boys category, Ajay Deep Singh, a national climber, clinched the first place followed by Arun Deep Singh and Ritesh Sharma. However, Arun Deep came back strongly in speed competition and became the new speed climbing champion by upsetting Ajay Deep who had to be content with 2nd place. The third position was secured by Ritesh Sharma.
In the Boys category, Mrityunjay Sharma upset his more fancied climber Aman Dogra, a national speed climbing champion, to win both Lead and Speed Climbing titles. Tandeep Singh of Shiksha Niketan, Jeevan Nagar secured the third position in both the events.
However, there was not much competition in the Sub Junior Girls category and Asma Gul, a Zonal medalist, won both the titles of Lead and Speed Climbing. Pooja Sharma and Shaweta Kapoor clinched the second and third places respectively.
The most interesting contest was witnessed in the Mini Boys category in which Rudra Partap Singh and Randeep Singh matched each other in strength and technique. However, Randeep Singh emerged victorious on the strength of better temperament. Janmit Singh of Shiksha Niketan clinched the third place.
There was another lovely competition in the Mini Girls category in which Samiksha Manhas emerged victorious. Nandita Dass and Loveneet Kour secured the second and third positions respectively.
A total of about 200 climbers from various districts of the State participated in the two day competition which was sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
Shawetica Khajuria, a national judge in sport climbing was the President of Jury who was well supported by technical personnel and logistics from IMF North Zone Committee, New Delhi.
Chairman Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee, New Delhi S Bhattacharjee was the chief guest on the valedictory function who while speaking exhorted the climbers to prepare for the next Olympics in which sport climbing is now one of the disciplines.
Among others present were Ram Khajuria and Yogeshwar Kumar, General Secretary and Vice President of Mountaineering Association of J&K, Arti Sharma, Rahul Sharma and Ramesh Khajuria, Directors of Sprawling Buds School, Sushil Singh, Navneet Gupta, Rakesh Goswami, Shashi Kant, Sakshi Magotra, Sudershan Singh, Fazal Ahmad, Anuradha and Satish Bhan.
