JAMMU, Sept 2: The Inter-Collegiate Fencing (Men & Women) Championship 2014-15, organized by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu commenced at Gymnasium Hall of the Directorate, here today.
Prof Dhian S Bhau, Director Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu inaugurated the Tournament in the presence of Romesh Sharma, Prof Ramesh Kumar Sharma (GDC Udhampur), Sumnesh Sharma, Dr Vinod Bakshi, Balbir Singh Chib, Suman Lata (Physical Directors), Raj Kumar Bakshi, Ravish Vaid, Gagan Kumar, Vikas Karlopia, Jai Bharat and P D Singh.
In epee men event, GDC Reasi prevailed over Govt MAM College by 15-11 points and won gold medal. Shivam Gupta (Reasi College) beat Ankur Sharma (MAM College) by 5-3 points, Abhinav Pandotra (Reasi) beat Pankaj (MAM) by 5-4 points and Naresh Kumar (Reasi) trounced Shubam (MAM) by 5-3 points. The bronze medal in this event went to GGM Science College and GDC Boys Udhampur.
In epee individual (women), Monika Sharam of P G Department, University of Jammu drubbed Rupali Sharma of MIET College Jammu by 10-9 points and won gold medal, while silver medal went to Rupali Sharma of MIET Jammu and the bronze medal was claimed by Akanksha Sabharwal and and Puja Devi of GCW Parade.
In sabre team (men), Govt MAM College team beat GGM Science College 15-4 points and won the gold medal. Javed Ahmed (MAM) beat Aman Kumar Sharma (GGM Science College) by 5-2 points, Tariq Ahmed (MAM) drubbed Mohit Sharma (GGM Science College) by 5-0 points and Javed Ahmed Choudhary (MAM) got better of Sushant Kumar (GGM Science College) by 5-2 points. The silver medal went to GGM Science College and bronze medal was claimed by MIET College, Jammu
The matches were officiated by international fencers Chotu Lal, Ajit Singh, Rachna Jamwal, Rashid Ahmed and Ujjwal Gupta.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu included Fencing in its sports calendar for the first time.
The Inter-Collegiate Handball (M & W) Tournament, in which 9 men teams and 8 women teams are participating, also commenced today.
