Bhan inaugurates North Zone Inter-University Handball C’ship

JAMMU, Nov 7: Former Director General of Police, J&K, Dr Ashok Bhan inaugurated the North Zone Inter-University Handball (Men and Women) Championship, being organized by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education at University of Jammu in an impressive, colourful and well attended function, here today.
Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof. R.D. Sharma presided over the function.
While speaking on the occasion, chief guest, Dr. Bhan highlighted the importance of sports and sportspersons in the society and said that people involved in sports are quite fit mentally and physically. He stressed upon the promotion of sports activities in all disciplines of  the University, affiliated colleges and above all by the State Government.
Dr Bhan further said that galaxy of handball players were produced during his tenure as Incharge Sports J&K Police and expressed desire for enhancing the standard of handball to produce International stuff again.
While addressing the gathering, Prof Sharma expressed happiness over the organization of such type of mega events by the Directorate of Sports and Physical and directed the staff of the Directorate for providing all facilities to the players from other States to make their stay quite comfortable during the tournament.
Earlier, Prof Dhian S Bhau, Director, Directorate of Sports and Physical Education presented welcome address.
Prof Bhau acknowledged the contributions of the Director, DIQA, Dr. Meenakshi Kelim, Dr. Pankaj Srivastava, and Director, DDE for their financial help to conduct the event smoothly and successfully.
The proceedings of the function were conducted by Dr Jaspal Barwal of DDE who also proposed the formal vote of thanks.
Among others  Prof Manoj Dhar, Registrar, J K Sharma, Special Secretary to Vice-chancellor, Prof AS Jasrotia, Head, Deptt of Remote sensing & GIS, B K Magotra, H S Chiab, Dr Brij Baloria, Kuldeep Magotra and Romesh Sharma were also present on the occasion.
In men’s section, Kumaun University Nainital lost to PTU Jallandhar by 32- 06, CCSU Meerut lost to GNDU Amritsar by 39-29, H P University Shimla lost to Delhi University by 41-26, Guru Angad Dev University Ludhiana defeated CSMU Kanpur by GADVASU by 28-26 and Punjab Agri University lost to LPU Phagwara by 40-34, while Bundelkhand University Jhansi got walkover against DCRUST Murthal, Sonepat; University of Jammu got walkover against Integral University Lucknow and BGSB University Rajouri got walkover against Thapar University Patiala.
In women’s section, HP University Shimla outplayed CDLU Sirsa by 32-11, PTU Jallandhar trounced University of Allahabad by 25-2, LPU Phagwara beat HNBGU Srinagar Garhwal by 23-3, while MJPR University Barelly got walkover against Amity University, Noida and PU Chandigarh got walkover against Bundelkhand University, Jhansi.
The matches were officiated by Sanjeev Singh, Kapil Sagotra, Govind Ram, Gourav Sharma, Vikas Sharma, Karun Magotra, Kartar Dogra, Lakhwhinder Singh, Kaushal Dikshit, Priya Charak, Ashish, Prabhleen Kour, Pooja Sharma, Jeevenjot and Reva Rajput.
