Mysore, Jan 22:
Baroda held the advantage despite a gritty fifty from Karnataka opener Lokesh Rahul on the second day of the Group A Ranji Trophy cricket match, here today.
Responding to Baroda’s first innings score of 335 in the four-day encounter, table-toppers Karnataka rode Rahul’s 89-run knock to end the day on 235 for six with Shreyas Gopal (26 not out) and Abrar Kazi (11 not out) fighting on.
Rahul, who fell 11 runs short of what would have been eight first-class hundred, was finally caught behind off Gagandeep Singh as he struck 10 fours and a six in his 160-ball stay at the wicket.
The third-wicket 80-run partnership between Rahul, who is fresh from an impressive Test outing in Australia, and Manish Pandey (34) set up Karnataka for a good reply but the middle-order batsmen failed to convert their starts into bigger scores.
If Deepak Hooda was the star on the opening day with his brilliant 142 then Rahul and Baroda bowlers shared the honours on Day 2.
Resuming on their overnight score of 320 for eight. The Aditya Waghmode-led side added just 15 runs to the total but a good bowling show by medium-pacer Sagar Mangalorkar (2-51) and Swapnil Singh (2-62) kept their dominance alive.
