LEH, Nov 12: The Hemis and Chemray Monastery and Young Drukpa Association (YDA) felicitated the Kung Fun Nuns who received the Asia Society’s Game Changer Awards in New York in October in recognition of their outstanding work in tackling the Key Challenges of the Himalayas in the 21st Century, in the field of the sustainability, gender equality and environment issues.
The Kung Fu Nuns of Drukpa order, some of the Himalayan’s most prominent rights advocates are received the awards for their path breaking work to empower women and dismantle gender stereotype in the Himalayas. The Kung Fu Nuns represent a new generation of Buddhists who use their teachings to take real action and effect meaningful change in the world by promoting gender equality and environmentalism.
Chief guest on the occasion Hill Council Chairman Gyal P Wangyal congratulating the Kung Fu Nuns for winning the International wards said that such awards has brought laurel to entire Ladakh region. “Ladakhi women have tremendous potential excelling in all fields including various sports such Ice Hockey, Archery, Mountaineering, football and other sporting activities” said Gyal while urging more women to come forward to take part in all activities. He also thanks Gyalwang Drukpa Rinpoche for providing Kung Fu training to the nuns along with the religious teachings.
Expressing her gratitude to Gyalwang Drukpa Rinpoche for entrusting various social responsibilities to the nuns along with the religious teaches one of the Kung Fu Nuns Mingure Palmo said Drukpa Rinpoche constant encouragement and support helps them to fetches the awards. “We have deserted the worldly life to practice Buddha Dharma but at the same time we got enough opportunities to do various social activities which are like compassion into Action” said Mingure.
YDA President Thinles Norbo, Ladakh Women Alliance President Tsering Chondol, Ladakh Women Ice Hockey Foundation President Tsewang Chuskit and YDA former President Padma Tashi also spoke on the occasion.
Skyabje Palga Rinpoche, Tulka Thapka, Chemray Chakzot, LGA President Venerable Shatup Chamba, LBA President PT Kunzang, Anjuman Imamiya President Ashraf Ali Barcha and Druk Amitabha Mountain Nuns were also present during felicitation programme.
A short documentary on nuns activities were also shown on the occasion.
