JAMMU, Dec 23: To groom sports culture among the youth, Delhi Public School (DPS) Jammu today organized its annual athletic meet. The Minister of State for Education, Technical Education, Culture, Tourism, Horticulture, Floriculture and Parks, Priya Sethi was the chief guest on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister highlighted the importance of extracurricular activities, games and sports in healthy life style and applauded the rich legacy of academic excellence of the school.
The Minster said that these activities bring all-round development of the students and appreciated the efforts of school management for providing a platform to the budding talent.
Priya said that sports is developing and becoming more professional and events like this draw great interest among young talent inspiring them to compete at national and international levels.
The Minister also gave away sports excellence awards to meritorious students of the school for their year round performance in various sports and games.
Principal DPS Ruchi Chabra, teachers, students and their parents were present on the occasion.
Earlier, the Sports Captains Raj Pratap Singh and Arpita Labroo  in a relay run, handed over the Sports Torch to the Minister who lit the auspicious Sports Lamp, which was immediately followed by the impressive March Past led by NCC Girl cadets , students of the five houses and the School Band followed by the Sports Oath  administered by the Principal, Ruchi Chabra, after which, the chief guest declared the meet open.
Up next was the release of balloons by the guests and a lively ‘Sporathon Walk’ by the players of the different Sports such as Shaolin, Basketball, Swimming, Table-Tennis, Chess, Football, Cricket, Volleyball, Lawn Tennis, Badminton, Speedball, Wushu, Taekwondo, Rope Skipping and Skating.
The participants of various cultural events dressed in colourful attire, fascinated everyone with their impressive Curtain hoola-hoop drill, Multi-Sports Dance, demo- display of  Wushu, Taekwondo, Yoga, Rope-Skipping, and Self defense.  Speaking of the track events, amidst loud cheering of the audience, tiny tots enjoyed running races such as ‘Pick & Run’ , ‘Roll Ball’ ,  ‘Book Balancing ‘, ‘ Hand Impression run’ ’60m run’ ‘Obstacle’ and ‘Three Legged’ race. On the other hand, the sub- juniors ran 100m and fun races such as ‘Balloon Bursting’ , ‘Lock -the- hand -run’  & ‘Pair – Balloon race’  whereas the juniors and the seniors enthusiastically ran the races such as , 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay races. They also actively participated in short put and long jumps.
The vote of thanks was presented by Headmistress, Meenu Gupta.
