JAMMU Oct 24: Provincial President National Conference Jammu, Devender Singh Rana today made a strong plea for making sports integral part of academic curriculum, emphasising its crucial importance in career advancement and overall personality development.
“Time has come when we should revisit out academic policy and make sports an essential part of academic activity at the basic level of schooling”, Mr Rana said while declaring open 11th Inter School Table Tennis State Championship, J&K, 2015 at M.A Stadium here this morning.
In this context, he referred to growing enthusiasm and zeal among youngsters towards sports and said this holds promise for larger participation, both in urban and rural areas. “For achieving optimum participation, the sports infrastructure will have to be upgraded, expanded and developed on modern lines”, he said, hoping this to be a societal initiative with active Governmental support.
Mr Rana noted with satisfaction the zest among young TT enthusiasts and reminded them of the mark made by noted players at national and international levels. “Amid us is a renowned player from the State, Ajay Sharma, who could prove to be an inspiration for budding players”, he added.
The Provincial President said sports unfold vistas of opportunities in the current competitive era and has emerged as a prized career option for youngster. With huge lot of talent available in Jammu and Kashmir, there is no reason why the young people can’t make a big impact in various sports and eventually take up these as their careers, he observed.
The Provincial president exhorted the organisers to make this sport popular in rural areas as well so that best available talent is identified and sharpened for representing the state in various events at the national level.
Ajay Sharma, organiser of the Championship and general secretary of the J&K TT Association, exuded confidence that the contestants will make it a big during the event, which will serve as an inspiration and motivation for others to emulate.
Earlier, in senior girls, KC Public School beat GD Goenka by 3-0 and National Academy Udhampur defeated Presenta-tion Convent School by 3-0, while in Junior girls, National Academy Udhampur got better of Heritage School by 3-0 and DPS trounced GD Goenka by 3-0.
In senior boys, GD Goenka defeated KC International School by 3-2, while in junior boys, KC Public School drubbed Hiranagar School by3-0 and Jodhamal Public School defeated their rival by 3-0.
Prominent among those present on the occasion were Rajan Sharma, Satish Gupta, Narinder Singh, Sheetal Gandotra, Satvir Singh, IP Singh, Manmeet Kour, Sandeep, Vishal, Vasu, Varinder Sharma, Ratnesh Puri and Meenu Aditya.
