Shreya clinches Gold at 36th Sr National Fencing C’ship

JAMMU, Nov 17: In a historic achievement for Jammu & Kashmir, ace fencer Shreya Gupta won the individual gold medal at the 36th Senior National Fencing Championship, marking her second individual gold at the senior national level.
In a thrilling final, Shreya edged past J.S. Jafarlin of Tamil Nadu with a narrow 15-14 victory. Her dominant run in the tournament included a 15-8 semifinal win over Sanya from Punjab and a 15-8 quarterfinal triumph against Manju of Haryana. Last year, Shreya had claimed the bronze after losing to Olympian Bhavani Devi in the semifinals.
Expressing her gratitude, Shreya thanked the J&K Sports Council Secretary Nuzhat Gul, mentors, dignitaries, and supporters who have guided her journey. She also acknowledged the Vijay Bharat Academy, Ahmedabad for providing top-class coaching, infrastructure, and logistical support.
Meanwhile, fellow J&K fencers Vishal Thapar and Waheed Sufiyan also showcased impressive performances, winning bronze medals at the ongoing championship.
