JAMMU, June 1: In a spirited tribute to the Indian Armed Forces and as part of the Fit India Movement, the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Jammu Centre, organized a vibrant Tiranga Rally here today. The event served as a curtain-raiser for World Bicycle Day, celebrated globally on June 3.
Over 200 cyclists, including prominent cycling groups and fitness enthusiasts, participated in the rally. The 25-kilometre route started and concluded at M.A. Stadium, Jammu, passing through Hari Niwas, BC Road, Gandhi Nagar, Apsara Road, and Last Morh. The streets resonated with chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram”, creating a wave of patriotic fervor throughout the city.
The rally was flagged off from MA Stadium Jammu by Nuzhat Gul, Secretary, J&K Sports Council, in the presence of Anisa Nabi, Chief Sports Officer, Aman Sharma, High Performance Director of SAI and CIC STC Jammu, and other senior officials. A highlight of the event was the enthusiastic participation of 30 women riders from the WDR (Women Do Ride) group, underlining the growing role of women in the fitness and cycling community.
Mementos were also presented to Om Prakash (General Secretary, J&K Cycling Association), Sudhir Anand (eminent rider) and Anisa Nabi, who is also a Brand Ambassador of the Fit India Mission, in recognition of their contributions.
Simultaneously, the J&K Sports Council (JKSC) marked World Bicycle Day across the Union Territory by organizing cycling rallies in multiple districts-from the scenic valleys of Kashmir to the bustling streets of Jammu. Participants included trainees from JKSC’s in-house academies, Khelo India State Centres of Excellence, Khelo India Centres, PMDP Centres, and local cycling clubs.
Satish Sharma, Minister for Youth Services and Sports, J&K, praised the participants, calling them “true ambassadors of Jammu & Kashmir.” Sarmad Hafeez, Secretary, Youth Services and Sports, commended the region’s commitment to a healthier, more active future.
Nuzhat Gul emphasized that cycling fosters discipline, unity, and well-being. She also acknowledged the efforts of the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports in promoting the nationwide “Sundays on Cycle” campaign.
The J&K Sports Council announced upcoming Cyclothons and competitive cycling events to further promote grassroots fitness culture across the UT.
