JAMMU, Nov 4: The first edition of the Ranking Wushu Tournament for the 20th Asian Games concluded today, featuring around 120 athletes from across India. The tournament, held over three days, included the top eight athletes shortlisted from Srinagar trials and two medallists from the All India Police Games.
Before competing, all athletes underwent a physical fitness assessment, with only those meeting the standards allowed to participate. Competitors showcased exemplary performances in both Sanda and Taolu events, reflecting high skill and discipline.
Following the tournament, the Selection Committee of the Wushu Association of India (WAI) recommended the top four athletes for the National Wushu Coaching Camp from 15th November to 14th December. Additionally, the top two ranked athletes will undergo two months of foreign exposure training in China from mid-December to 30th January. The second edition of the Ranking Tournament is proposed for February 2026, with open trials in five events to select the remaining three ranking squad members.
Notably, eight athletes from Jammu & Kashmir secured spots among the top-ranked competitors, underlining the region’s growing prominence in Wushu. During the closing ceremony, Vijay Saraf, Suhel Ahmed, Kuldeep Handoo (Dronacharya Awardee) and Atul AP (Chief Coach) were present.
