JAMMU, July 9: Rajat Charak has made history by becoming the first-ever athlete from Jammu & Kashmir to win a Gold medal at the prestigious Asia Cup Wushu Championship, held in China from July 2 to 7, competing against a tough opponent from Kazakhstan in the final bout, Charak’s victory brought immense pride to both Jammu & Kashmir and the nation.
Charak was a part of the 16-member Indian Wushu contingent that performed exceptionally well, securing a total of 11 medals — 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 5 Bronze. The Indian team, fully supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Sports Authority of India, had undergone a one-month foreign exposure training camp in China prior to the competition.
Rajat Charak had previously won a Silver medal at the 2024 Asian Wushu Championship in Macau, China, which qualified him for this elite continental event. His consistent performances on the international stage highlight his dedication and talent. Currently, he serves in the Indian Army, adding to the pride of his achievement.
Upon their return, the Indian Wushu team received a grand welcome at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport by the Wushu Association of India (WAI). WAI office bearers including CEO Suhel Ahmed, President Vijay Saraf, Vice President Ranjeet Kalra, General Secretary Bhavneet, and Treasurer Shoot Sharma congratulated Rajat on his landmark win.
Dronacharya Awardee and national coach Kuldeep Handoo also lauded Rajat and the entire team, emphasizing the potential of Wushu in Jammu & Kashmir. He called on the Government to provide greater support to the sport in the region, especially with major international events like the Asian Games on the horizon.
