Pritpal Pokwara, Monu lift Wrestling’s final bouts

JAMMU, Nov 18: Pritpal Pokwara of Ambala and Monu from Delhi lifted final bouts by defeating Beeniya Pahalwan of Jammu and Pinder Jandyala of Punjab, organised at Sunail village of Akhnoor, here today.
Both the winners were awarded with Rs 1.7 lakhs cash prize each by chief guest, Zorawar Singh Jammu- Team Jammu chief in presence of guest of honour, KD Bhagat, DySP DAR Jammu and special guest, Rajan Singh Happy, president Yuva Rajput Sabha.
A total of 110 bouts with cash rewards of Rs 9 lakh were held in different weight categories, wherein budding wrestlers from Jammu, Kathua, Reasi and Samba districts as well as renowned wrestlers from Punjab, Haryana and New Delhi participated.
Chairman of Team Jammu said that traditional sports like wrestling is regaining its glory and becoming popular among Jammu youth day by day. “Sports are not only beneficial for overall physical growth but lately it has emerged as a big incentive in shaping careers,” he said. He called upon the elected Sarpanchs and Panchs to organize sports activities, so that rural youth can get opportunities to exhibit their talent.
DySP Bhagat said that these types of events rejuvenate rich cultural values and also refrains young blood from taking drugs which is now a bigger social menace.
The wrestling event was organized by the Dangal Committee Sunail, headed by Sarpanch Pershant Sharma along with Darshan Lal, Ravi Kumar, Vicky Chalotra, Naveen Bakshi, Rajneev Verma, Tilak Raj and Shotu Kumar.
