JAMMU, Apr 19: The management of Maulana Azad (MA) Stadium in Jammu has raised serious concerns over recurring waterlogging, garbage and mud accumulation at the main entrance of the cricket ground due to a persistently blocked drainage system. The situation has disrupted regular sports activities and created severe hygiene issues, especially as a national-level cricket tournament is currently underway at the venue.
In a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Jammu Municipal Corporation (Ref No. MAS/18-21/2025), the Assistant Manager of the stadium highlighted the long-standing problem of a drain (nallah) that flows in front of the stadium gate. The drain becomes clogged during the rainy season each year, causing water to stagnate near the entrance and hindering access for players, officials and visitors.
“This problem arises every year during the rainy season, and despite repeated requests in the past, no permanent solution has been provided,” the official stated, expressing frustration over the lack of effective action.
Officials also noted that the poor conditions have negatively impacted logistics and morale. “Such poor hygiene conditions make it difficult for us to work. What kind of message are we sending to players who have come here from different states?” a stadium representative asked, calling for a long-term fix to prevent recurring disruptions.
The letter has also been marked to the Secretary, Chief Sports Officer and Divisional Sports Officer of the J&K Sports Council, seeking immediate intervention.
In response, an official from the Jammu Municipal Corporation confirmed that steps are being taken to address the issue. “We have deployed two JCB machines to clear the garbage and blockage from around the stadium,” the official said. However, the official acknowledged that recurring drainage overflow is due to diversion issues in the existing system.
With monsoon season approaching, stakeholders are calling for urgent infrastructural upgrades to safeguard the stadium’s status as Jammu’s premier sports facility and ensure the smooth conduct of both national and regional events in the future.
