SRINAGAR, July 2: In a great initiative to divert the minds of J&K youth towards sports and positive direction, Indian Army in collaboration with All J&K Chess Association commenced a mega three day Workshop-cum-Chess Competition at Tangdhar today in which about 1500 students and youth of the area participated with great enthusiasm.
It was a pleasant sight when children as small as first class were seen mastering their skills to move knights and rooks on the chess board.
With a slight frown on the brows indicating their thoughtful demeanor, the children and youth alike were engrossed in learning the basics of Chess, one of the oldest and royal games of this civilization.
The event organised under the aegis of Shakti Vijay Brigade, is being conducted in the form of a workshop and coaching for two days starting from today.
The workshop is being run in three schools of Tangdhar valley at Tithwal, Kandi and Tadd wherein participants are drawn from designated cluster schools as well. The event will conclude on July 4 after organizing a competition among students selected from workshop on July 4.
The first day of the workshop drew huge crowd of students both boys and girls and the enthusiasm shown by them was palpable. The students were very happy with the initiative and wanted to learn more about the game.
“It will channelize the energy of the students and young boys in constructive activity and it is a good mental exercise”, Mr Qureshi, Vice Principal from Secondary School Tad said.
Atul Kumar Gupta, President, All J&K Chess Association spoke on the benefits of the game and urged all students and teachers to make it a part of their regular sports activity. He brought out a number of advantages of the game and extended wholehearted support in nurturing and providing bigger platform to the deserving players.
He said that in a place like Tangdhar and Valley, which are snowbound for considerable period, Chess will be the best suited game for youth.
Earlier in the day, Commander, Shakti Vijay formally declared open the Chess Workshop at Tadd where chess enthusiast including students, youth, parents and teachers witnessed the proceedings with great enthusiasm and joy.
Baldev Raj, Vice President, AJKCA, Brigadier CS Dewgun, Colonel Vinay Jasrotia, many officers from the army and civil administration and senior citizens were also present on the occasion.
