JAMMU, Oct 14: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jammu (SKUAST-J) organized a two days vocational training programme on the “Techniques of “Tie & Dye” for the rural school dropout girls of Nagrota.
During the training programme, the adolescent school dropout girls and women of the Nagrota area were chosen as target group as they were already trained for making garments like suits, kurtas, cushions, bed covers etc by Social Welfare Department.
The programme was conducted by Dr Sheetal Badyal, Subject Matter Specialist (H Sc) and Poonam Abrol, Programme Assistant (H Sc). During the training programme, the trainees were imparted the skill of “Bandhani”, a world famous traditional art of Gujarat and Rajasthan for making colourful suits and dupattas. The participants were demonstrated the techniques using learning by doing method. They were given basic knowledge of colour mixing and tying & dying of fabric.
Dr Sheetal Badyal highlighted the basic objective of the training programme to upgrade the skills of already trained women in garment making so that they can improvise their fabric by using “Bandhani” skill of tying & dying and can enhance their income. She also stressed that they can open a small unit within their homes at a very low cost as it doesn’t take such machinery or equipments like other enterprises.
Poonam Abrol elaborated the various items to be prepared like decorative curtains, dupattas, wall hanging, suits, cushion covers, bed covers etc by using tie and dye techniques. They can use tie & dye together with embroidery and use of laces to make decorative items. The local women of the area can also use the skill for making designer dupattas and earn income for themselves.
At the end of the training programme, Sushma Abrol, In-charge of the Social Welfare Centre, Nagrota, appealed the KVK Jammu for organizing these kinds of activities in future also.
