SRINAGAR, May 25: In a landmark achievement for Indian mountaineering, a Joint Expedition Team comprising instructors from the nation’s top mountaineering institutes Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering & Winter Sports (JIM&WS), Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) successfully summited Mount Everest (8848.86m).
The expedition was flagged off on March 26 by Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth in New Delhi. Battling extreme weather and altitude, the team showcased exceptional grit, discipline and teamwork, setting a new milestone in India’s mountaineering history.
Led by Col Anshuman Bhadauria (Principal, NIM) and Col Hem Chandra Singh (Principal, JIM&WS), the summit team included Hav Rajendra Mukhiya (JIM&WS), Rakesh Singh Rana and Sub Bahadur Pahan (NIM) and Pasang Tenzing Sherpa and Hav Thupstan Tsewang (HMI).
As part of their acclimatization, the team also scaled Mt. Lobuche (6119m) on April 18. They have now safely descended to Everest base camp and are en route to Kathmandu.
