JAMMU, Jan 4: Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association’s U-16 squad is on the verge of a historic milestone, poised to claim its maiden BCCI Vijay Merchant Trophy in the Boys’ U-16 Tournament at Lalbhai Contractor Stadium, Surat.
J&K’s bowlers delivered a spectacular performance in the Plate Group final, bundling out Mizoram for a mere 100 runs in their first innings. Skipper Lawma top-scored with a gritty 36, while Johan managed 14, with no other batsman reaching double figures. Left-arm spinner Sanil Singh and pace spearhead Jaskaran Singh starred with three wickets each, supported by Rajveer Singh and Hamaaf Firdous, who claimed a wicket apiece.
In reply, J&K took control, reaching 223/4 at stumps on Day 1. Skipper Smagey Khajuria anchored the innings with an unbeaten 74 off 112 balls, including 11 fours and a six. Explosive opener Adnan Manzoor blazed 74 off 55 balls, hitting 13 fours and 2 sixes. Karman Singh and Arsalan Nayak contributed crucial 27 runs each.
With a first-innings lead of 123 runs and six wickets still in hand, J&K is strongly positioned to secure a historic Vijay Merchant Trophy triumph, showcasing the talent and determination of its young cricketers.
