JAMMU, July 9: Bringing pride to the Union Territory, Jammu and Kashmir’s ace softball athletes Shaista Wani and Farhana Rehman have been selected to represent India in the upcoming Asia Cup (Women) Softball Championship, scheduled to be held from July 14 to 20, at the Sports Stadium in Xian, China.
Organized by Chinese Softball Association under the aegis of Softball Asia, the championship also serves as a qualifier for the Women’s Softball World Cup 2026. India must finish in the top two to secure a World Cup berth.
The selection of Shaista (Srinagar) and Farhana (Pulwama) followed rigorous national trials held on April 15 and 16 by the Softball Association of India (SBAI). Both athletes participated in two national camps—one in Indore, Madhya Pradesh and another ongoing at Vikas Puri Stadium, New Delhi.
Having started their sporting journey at a young age, the duo has consistently earned accolades at national-level competitions for Jammu & Kashmir.
Waseem Raja Khan, Honorary General Secretary of the J&K Softball Association and Joint Secretary of SBAI, congratulated the athletes and announced a felicitation ceremony upon their return. The Indian team will depart for China on July 12 under the banner of the Softball Association of India, the national governing body for the sport.
