JAMMU, Nov 26: Jammu and Kashmir senior men’s cricket team began their Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy campaign in style, producing a clinical performance to crush a strong Maharashtra side by five wickets at Eden Gardens, Kolkata today.
Put into bat, Maharashtra’s batting lineup, featuring stars like Prithvi Shaw, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Rahul Tripathi, struggled against J&K’s disciplined bowling attack. The visitors were restricted to a modest 130 runs in 19.5 overs, with only Vicky Ostwal (21), Arshin Kulkarni (20) and NS Nair (1) making notable contributions. Aquib Nabi led J&K’s attack, claiming 3 wickets for 28 runs, while pace sensation Umran Malik impressed with genuine speed and bounce, taking 2 wickets alongside Yudhvir Singh. Left-arm spinner Abid Mushtaq also picked 2 wickets and off-spinner Murugan Ashwin took one.
In reply, J&K’s openers laid a solid foundation and unbeaten knocks by Kanhaiya Wadhawan (19*) and Abid Mushtaq (18*) helped seal a five-wicket victory. Qamran top-scored with 28 off 27 balls, while skipper Shubham Khajuria added 26 and Abdul Samad contributed 20 runs. For his all-round brilliance, Abid Mushtaq was named Player of the Match. Maharashtra’s RS Hangargekar and PH Solanki took 2 wickets each.
Member Administration JKCA Brig Anil Gupta hailed the day as historic for J&K cricket, praising the senior team’s emphatic win over Maharashtra.
