JAMMU, Apr 13: In a remarkable display of talent and determination, athletes from Jammu and Kashmir secured three medals in Thangta during the 68th National School Games (U-19 Boys and Girls) held at Imphal, Manipur, today emerging as runners-up in the discipline.
Hammad Bashir from Pulwama won a prestigious Gold medal, while Ajaz Ahmad Sofi from Kupwara and Murieza Iqbal Lone from Pulwama each brought home Bronze medals, showcasing the strength of J&K’s martial arts talent on the national stage.
Commissioner Secretary Youth Services and Sports, Sarmad Hafeez, and Director General, YSS, Rajinder Singh Tara, congratulated the medalists and support staff for the achievement, stating that such consistent performances highlight the growing sporting excellence in Jammu and Kashmir. Tara emphasized that the Union Territory is inching closer to a record medal haul in the current season of the National School Games, with 52 medals already secured and several more expected in disciplines like Roller Skating, Football, Gatka, and Thangta.
He noted that around 1800 athletes from J&K have already participated in the National School Games this season, with 400 more set to compete in upcoming events. Tara praised the athletes’ dedication and reiterated the department’s commitment to developing J&K into a national sporting hub. He also acknowledged the crucial support from the administration and coaches in nurturing young sports talent across the Union Territory.
