J&K Athletes flagged off for 8th National Masters Games

JAMMU, Jan 24: The Jammu and Kashmir Masters Games Association (JKMGA) today flagged off its contingent for the 8th National Masters Games, scheduled to be held at Pune, Maharashtra, from January 27 to 31. A brief but enthusiastic flag-off ceremony was organised at Gulshan Ground, Jammu, marking the official departure of the Masters athletes.
A total of 45 men and women athletes will represent Jammu and Kashmir in the prestigious national event, competing across 10 sporting disciplines. The contingent includes players from seven districts—Jammu, Kathua, Udhampur, Baramulla, Srinagar, Samba and Rajouri—showcasing the Union Territory’s rich and diverse sporting talent.
The athletes will participate in Handball (Men and Women), Weightlifting (Men), Athletics (Men), Chess (Men and Women), Karate (Men), Swimming (Men), Judo (Men), Badminton (Women), Table Tennis (Men) and Lawn Tennis (Men).
The ceremony was graced by the chief guest, Dronacharya Awardee and Chief Wushu Coach of India, DySP Kuldeep Handoo. Addressing the gathering, he highlighted the psychological and emotional benefits of sports participation at any age, stating that regular training, goal-setting and competition help boost self-confidence, reduce stress and enhance overall mental well-being. He lauded the Masters Games for promoting inclusivity and breaking age-related stereotypes, asserting that the event celebrates resilience, determination and lifelong sporting spirit.
JKMGA President Ranjit Singh Chib, former SSP and international handball player, though unable to attend, conveyed his message to the athletes, emphasizing the importance of the Masters Games in promoting lifelong fitness and inspiring younger generations by redefining competitive sports beyond age barriers.
General Secretary Neete Kaur expressed gratitude to the district associations and athletes for their dedication, especially amid challenging winter conditions. She also thanked DySP Kuldeep Handoo and the Jammu and Kashmir Police for their continued support.
The proceedings were conducted by Mamta Bajaj, Vice President of JKMGA, while Ashok Sharma, Executive Member, presented the vote of thanks. Several sports dignitaries, including Romesh Sharma, Rabinder Singh, Ranjeet Singh Wazir, Kuljeet Singh and Sanjay Puri, were present and extended their best wishes to the contingent.
