JAMMU, Oct 1: India’s Sharvaanica AS brought glory to the nation by winning the Gold medal in the Under-10 Girls category at the FIDE World Cadet Chess Championship, which concluded in Kazakhstan on Tuesday. Remarkably, Sharvaanica had lost her first game of the tournament but bounced back with nine consecutive wins, showcasing resilience and exceptional skill.
In the Girls Under-12 category, Kiyaana Parihar secured the Bronze medal with a strong score of 8.5 points, defeating Georgia’s Saltkhutsishvili Sarawon in the final round by converting a pawn advantage into a win. In the Boys Under-10 category, Mani Sarbartho also finished with 8.5 points and earned the Bronze medal after drawing his final-round game against CM Karunasena A.P. Chenitha.
Other commendable performances from the Indian team included Pratitee Bordoloi, who placed 4th in the Girls U-12 category and Madhvendra Pratap Sarma, who secured 5th position in the U-12 Open section. In the Girls U-10 category, Vanshika Rawat finished 5th, while Divi Bijesh came 9th. In the Girls U-8 section, Aaranya R and Teesha Byadwal secured 7th and 9th places respectively. Tamizh Amudhan placed 10th in the U-10 Open category.
The championship featured 844 players from 88 countries, reflecting its global scale. The Indian contingent was mentored by Grandmaster MS Thej Kumar and Women Grandmaster Arthie Ramaswamy, with Atul Kumar Gupta serving as the Head of Delegation. The team was sponsored by the Sports Authority of India. The prize distribution ceremony was graced by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, who presented medals to the winners in a grand closing event.
