DEHRADUN, Jan 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at the opening ceremony of the 38th National Games in Dehradun, laid out a visionary plan for the future of Indian sports. He reiterated the Government’s strong push to secure the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympics, calling it a game-changer for the country’s sports infrastructure and overall economy. Modi emphasized that hosting the Olympics would not only uplift sports in India but also drive development in key sectors like construction, transport, and tourism, with global athletes and visitors arriving in the country.
Modi explained the extensive benefits of hosting such a prestigious event, noting that it would enhance athlete facilities, improve infrastructure, and boost tourism. “The Olympics are not just a sporting event. They bring advancements in infrastructure, improve connectivity, and create new growth opportunities,” he said, stressing the broader impact of the event on India’s global standing.
The Prime Minister also discussed several ongoing Government initiatives aimed at nurturing talent, including the Khelo India program, Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), and a three-fold increase in the sports budget to further support the development of athletes. Modi highlighted the importance of programs like the Khelo India Youth Games, Khelo India University Games, and Khelo India Para Games, which have opened new opportunities for young and para-athletes to excel.
In addition to his sports-related agenda, Modi urged youth to focus on fitness, recommending a 10% reduction in oil intake and encouraging more physical activity to combat rising obesity levels.
A significant portion of Modi’s speech was dedicated to applauding the state of Uttarakhand, particularly the efforts of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. He praised the state for its progressive initiatives, including the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the promotion of Winter Tourism, and the Plastic-Free Campaign. Modi connected these state efforts to the spirit of inclusivity found in sports. He also praised the Green Games theme at the National Games, which featured eco-friendly measures such as the creation of medals from e-waste and tree planting by athletes.
The Prime Minister’s visit and speech not only lent significant support to India’s 2036 Olympic bid but also highlighted the nation’s growing focus on sports, sustainability, and innovation through state-led initiatives.
