Isle of Man, Oct 3: India’s young Grandmaster Harika Dronavalli came out unscathed against World No. 6 Wesley So, scrambling to a well-earned draw in the Isle of Man International Chess here.
Harika (ELO 2542) found herself against her more accomplished opponent (ELO 2782) in a complicated position early in the game itself but managed to steer it towards a draw to pick up a crucial half a point.
The World No. 10, ranked 36 in the tournament, easily won her first round against Rocabado Fernando of Argentina to be on one and half points.
“It was a complicated game, with lot of counter play,” said Harika, sounding relieved and happy after her draw last night. “In the later stage, I thought I had a chance but I could not assess the position clearly and settled for a stalemate. Overall, I am happy with the way I am playing,” she added.
The Guntur lass next plays England’s Grand Master Michael Adams in another crucial match. Adams, ranked 4 in the tournament, will come into the clash after a draw with German’s Grand Master Jan-Christian Schroeder.
Harika has met Adams four times so far, managing only one draw. (PTI)
