Chandigarh, July 11: Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs & Sports Jitendra Singh has approved a financial assistance of Rs 60,500 to former athlete Shanthi Sondarajan, who had won a silver medal in Asian Games 2006 at Doha but was later withdrawn after she was ineligible to compete in the female category because of female hyperandrogenism.
According to some reports earlier, Ms Sondarajan was found living in indigent circumstances, working as a daily wager at a brick kiln in Tamil Nadu.
Ms Sondarajan has applied for pursuing a regular National Institute of Sports (NIS) diploma in coaching at the Centre of Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Bengaluru.
The assistance was extended to her taking into consideration her poor financial condition. The assistance will help her meet expenditure related to fee, lodging & boarding as well as a sports kit at SAI Centre.
The assistance was sanctioned under the National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons.(UNI)
