Geology, Economics Deptts register wins, get berth in quarterfinals

JAMMU, Apr 15: Geology and Economics Departments registered victories over their respective opponents and registered berth in the quarterfinal stage of the Cricket event, being organised during the ongoing Inter-Department Tournament (Men) by Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu at Varsity ground, here today.
In the first match of the day, Geology Department thrashed English Department by just 5 runs in a nail biting match and advanced to the next round of the tournament.
Electing to bat first, after winning the toss, Geology Department set a huge target of 168 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in stipulated 20 overs in front of its opponent team. Arshad Malik played well, chipped in some crispy shots in his 40 runs contribution including six boundaries, while Kasturi also made 34 runs with the help of 4 boundaries. Sanjeev also played well and chipped in 30 runs including seven crispy boundaries.
For English Department, Ashish was the wrecker-in-chief, who scalped 4 wickets by giving 28 runs in his four overs spell, while Manjeet and Stanzin also took 2 wickets each. Sajad pocketed one wicket.
Whle batting, English Department players tried their level best to clinch the match, but failed and bundled out at 163 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in allotted 20 overs. Aabir was the top scorer with 51 runs in 21 balls including seven crispy boundaries and two lofty sixes, while Stanzin also made 43 runs with the help of four balls towards the fence. Atiet also contributed 33 runs.
For Geology Department, Sandeep scalped 2 wickets by conceding 24 runs in 2 overs, while Sahil took one wicket.
Meanwhile, in the second match, Economics Department thrashed Botany Department by 34 runs and sailed into the quarterfinal round.
Electing to bat first, after winning the toss, Economics Department scored 146 runs for the loss of just 4 wickets in allotted 16 overs. Rajesh chipped in some crispy shots and made 47 runs with the help of seven balls towards the fence, while Nikhil and Sukhvinder also contributed 37 and 27 runs respectively.
For Botany Department, Pardeep Singh, Nishwant Singh and Aamir scalped one wicket apiece.
In the second inning, Botany Department failed to chase the target and bundled out at 112 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in stipulated 16 overs. Kamaljeet and Rahul chipped in 26 runs each, while Pardeep made 13 runs.
For Economics Department side, Sahin and Sukhwinder scalped 2 wickets each, while Tariq pocketed one wicket.
The matches were officiated by Vijay Dogra, Jagtar Singh, Suresh Singh and Pankaj Sasan as umpires, while Satpal and Manu Khajuria maintained the scorecards.
The tournament is being organised under the overall supervision of Prof Dhian Singh Bhau, Director, Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu.
