SRINAGAR, Nov 9: The office of the Programme Coordinator National Service Scheme (NSS) University of Kashmir today organized two cycle rallies in collaboration with Jamia Millia Central University, New Delhi in which more than 80 cyclists which included students, supporting staff and members of medical team participated.
The first cycle rally themed ‘Save Dal’ was flagged-off by Registrar University of Kashmir Prof Zaffar A Reshi from KU`s Sheikh Hamza Guest House at 8.30 am in which around 40 students including both boy and girls participated.
The rally started -off from KU campus and taking the foreshore road reached the historical Mughal garden Shalimar and culminated back at the KU campus.
During the rally the participants highlighted the need of keeping the Dal surroundings clean and pollution -free and raised awareness amongst the people living in the catchment areas of the lake to avoid littering around the lake.
While flagging-off the rally Registrar KU Prof Zaffar Reishi said that there is need to sensitize the people about such eco-sensitive issues which if left unattended and unaddressed can have devastating consequences for ecologically fragile valley.
“Dal is our asset and it is our moral responsibility to protect this heritage from encroachments and unwanted human-interference which can spell doom for its flora and fauna. The lake is our identity and we have to safeguard our identity,” said Prof Zaffar Reishi while flagging-off the rally.
Programme Coordinator NSS KU Prof Farooq Khan who was monitoring the rally said that such initiatives are very timely in creating awareness amongst the people about pressing issues and problems and at the same time inculcate values of selfless service amongst the young students and cadres of NSS.
Later, another cycle rally ‘Building India Safe for Women’ organized by NSS KU and Jamia Millia, was flagged-off jointly by IG Kashmir AG Mir and Registrar KU Prof Zaffar A Reishi at 10 am which started-off at KU`s Gandhi Bhawan and will culminate at Jamia Millia Islamia on Nov 25.
Aimed at generating awareness about women`s empowerment and security the rally will cover a distance of approx 1100 kms and will pass through the states of J&K, Punjab, HP, Haryana and Union territory of Chandigarh.
IG Kashmir, AG Mir flagged off the rally in an impressive function.
Speaking on the occasion Registrar KU Prof Zaffar A Reishi said that the rally will provide an opportunity to our students to understand the flora and fauna of the different region of the India.
The rally consisted of 42 cyclists which included 27 students, 15 supporting staff and supporting medical staff.
