JAMMU, Feb 20: The Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA) has nominated international athlete Bilquis Mir as coach of the Indian team preparing for the upcoming Asian Games 2026. In a letter dated February 3, 2026, IKCA President Prashant Kushwaha wrote to the J&K Sports Minister requesting that her services be made available for the National Team’s preparation from February 15 to September 30, 2026.
Bilquis Mir brings vast experience and technical expertise, having previously served as National Coach and significantly contributed to the development of kayaking and canoeing at both national and international levels. IKCA highlighted her international exposure, proven coaching capabilities and strategic vision, noting that her involvement in the National Coaching Camp would strengthen the team’s preparation and enhance performance at the Asian Games.
Speaking on her selection, Bilquis Mir expressed pride in representing the Union Territory at such a prestigious championship, calling it an honour for both her personally and the region. She has also been selected as Chief Finish Line Judge for the 2026 ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup and appointed as Technical Official (ITO) for the Asian Games Nagoya 2026, in addition to her role as ITO and judge for the Canoeing World Cup, making her the only Indian to receive these nominations.
However, Mir pointed out that she is yet to receive the required clearance from her concerned department she is serving in J&K UT to attend these international assignments. Recalling her experience during the Paris 2024 Olympics, she said she had to approach the Court to obtain clearance, which she described as “deeply painful and avoidable.” With 28 years devoted to water sports as an athlete, coach and international official, she emphasized her commitment to promoting the sport and guiding Indian athletes toward excellence.
Mir expressed hope that the authorities will grant the necessary approvals promptly, in the larger interest of the nation and to advance Indian water sports on the global stage.
