KATHUA, Nov 25: The Bani Premier League (BPL), a four-day cricket tournament designed to engage local youth in sports and combat drug abuse, commenced at the Government Degree College (GDC) Bani ground, here today. The tournament, organized by Bharat Sports Club with support from the Indian Army and NHPC, Seva Second Power Station, Machhakka, features 12 teams from the region.
The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma, Principal of GDC Bani and Surinder Raina, SHO Bani, who jointly inaugurated the tournament. In their address, both chief guests highlighted the importance of such events in remote areas, stressing that they not only provide a platform for emerging sports talent but also play a crucial role in keeping the youth away from drugs.
Bharat Sports Club General Secretary, Dalip Kumar Tandon, shared that this is the first edition of the BPL, formerly known as the Freedom Cup. The tournament has been reintroduced in a new format after 15 years under the BPL banner.
In the opening match, Rising Star Challa chased down Rising Star Guddu’s target of 74/7, reaching 74/3 in 8.4 overs, winning by 7 wickets. In Match 2nd, Royal Challengers Duggan posted 78/5 in 10 overs, while Spartan Strikers managed 74/7, giving Duggan a narrow win by 4 runs. The final match of the day saw Golden Gladiators set a target of 78/6. Sangam Hariprayag Sarthali fell short, finishing at 74/9, handing Golden Gladiators a victory by 4 wickets.
