JAMMU, Sept 1: The Yonex-Sunrise All J&K Senior & Junior Ranking cum Selection Badminton Tournament commenced today at Badminton Hall, MA Stadium, Jammu. Organized by the Badminton Association of J&K in collaboration with J&K Sports Council, the four-day tournament will conclude on September 4.
The tournament was inaugurated by Dr. OD Sharma, Vice President of Badminton Association of India and Chairman of the Badminton Association of J&K. Around 150 players from various districts of the Union Territory are competing across several categories.
Notable dignitaries present at the opening included Arshi Nad (Manager, Indoor Complex), Balbir Jamwal, Dushyant Sharma (General Secretary & Treasurer, BAJK), Pawanjit Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Anil Gurkha, Basanti Bhat and Preeti Gupta. SAI Coaches Touseef Ahmed and Vikram Saini are assisting in organizing the matches.
On Day 1, Naveed Ahmad (Poonch) defeated Abrar Touseef (Srinagar) by 21-15, 21-16 in the Boys U-19 Singles. In the Girls U-19 Singles, Zinnia Lone (Srinagar) comfortably beat Shreya Gupta by 21-11, 21-13. The U-19 Mixed Doubles saw Samaksh & Zinnia (Srinagar) dominate Vivaan & Paavni, winning by 21-8, 21-8. In the Men’s Singles category, Vaibhav outplayed Brijeshwer by 21-9, 21-12. Meanwhile, Vipul & Sahil claimed victory over Laksh & Samer (Reasi) in the Men’s Doubles match.
The tournament serves as a selection platform for the J&K UT teams participating in the North Zone Inter State Badminton Championships, to be held at Una (Himachal Pradesh) from September 8 to 11.
