Asmita Khelo India Women’s Pencak Silat League begins

SRINAGAR, Apr 6: The Asmita Khelo India Women’s Pencak Silat League, a pioneering initiative to promote women’s sports, was inaugurated at the Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor Stadium, here today. The ceremony was graced by Sarmad Hafeez, Secretary of the J&K Sports Council, as the chief guest, with Nuzhat Gul, Secretary of J&K Sports Council, attending as the guest of honour.
The league, part of the Khelo India program, aims to empower women athletes and nurture a culture of sports excellence in India. It features the Pencak Silat discipline, with women athletes from across the country competing at a national level.
Sarmad Hafeez emphasized, “Promoting women’s sports is crucial for their empowerment and to create an inclusive sporting environment. This league is a step in the right direction.”
Nuzhat Gul, Secretary J&K Sports Council, stated, “Sports play a pivotal role in empowering women. The Asmita Khelo India Women’s Pencak Silat League will not only enhance sporting talent but also contribute to the overall development of women.”
The ceremony also included a lamp-lighting ritual and a demonstration of Pencak Silat techniques by the athletes. The league is part of the Khelo India initiative, which has seen over 63,000 women athletes participate in over 520 competitions nationwide.
