JAMMU, Nov 17: Naib Subedar Ravinder Singh, a 29-year-old ace marksman from the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU), Mhow, was given a grand welcome in his native Bishnah town of Jammu division after winning the gold medal in the Men’s 50m Free Pistol event at the ISSF World Championships held at the Egypt International Olympic City Range.
Hailing from Bishnah, Ravinder faced a field of 47 elite shooters and delivered a stellar performance. After a modest start of 93 in his opening series, he staged a remarkable comeback with scores of 98, 94, 95, 93, and an outstanding 96, finishing with a total of 569 points. His brilliance placed him ahead of South Korea’s Kim Cheongyong (556) and Individual Neutral Athlete Anton Aristarkhov (556), who won silver and bronze respectively.
This victory is particularly commendable as Ravinder had spent more than two weeks away from practice due to the birth of his daughter and managed only 4–5 days of training before the championship. His discipline, focus, and resilience propelled him to a career-defining win.
Ravinder’s performance also contributed to India securing a silver medal in the 50m Free Pistol team event alongside Kamaljeet (540) and Yogesh Kumar (537), finishing with 1646 points, just two short of South Korea’s gold.
A National Games silver medallist earlier this year, Ravinder expressed his gratitude, saying, “It’s not my personal achievement but for all those who stood behind me. I am thankful to my family and the Army for their support.”
Ex-MLA Ashwani Kumar Sharma praised him as a role model, while hundreds of residents of Bishnah turned up to celebrate his historic achievement.
