Hero Club lifts Arun Memorial Football Gold Cup

JAMMU, Apr 28: Hero Club today won the 1st Arun Sharma Memorial Football Gold Cup Tournament which was organised by the Climrate Football Club under the aegis of J&K Football Association (JKFA) at Mini Football Stadium, Parade, here.
In the title clash, Hero Club defeated equally good side of Shaheen Football Club by a solitary goal. The only goal came through young Raghav Gupta soon after the second half play begun. Raghav made a power-packed kick from outside the penalty area right into the net to the beating the goal-keeper.
In the later stages of the game, both sides got a couple of sure goal chances but failed to convert them.
In the final and valedictory of the tournament, Member Legislative Assembly (MLC), Ashok Khajuria was chief guest, who presented the title trophies as also other individual prizes. Rajeshwar Singh (SSP, AIG Personnel PHQ) and Dushyant Sharma (SSP, Staff Officer PHQ) were guests of honour.
A number of national, international and veteran players from the State in the disciplines of Football and Handball were also felicitated by the chief guest on behalf of the organising committee, Ashutosh Sharma (president) and Rakesh Khanna (organising secretary).
Speaking to the gathering, chief guest lauded the efforts of Arun Sharma for his contribution to the sports in J&K, especially in the game of Handball. He appreciated the Climrate Club and the organising committee for providing young talented boys’ chance to exhibit their talent.
Earlier, 16 teams took part in this tournament on knock-out basis. The event was organised to recall the unique services of former Divisional Sports Officer of the J&K State Sports Council (JKSSC) as football and handball player, who later served as a coach and produced international stuff from J&K, including India captains.
Among the distinguished gathering were Joint Secretary Indian Olympic Association and president J&K Handball Association, Dr S M Bali, Arvind Sharma, Director Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu, Dr Daud Iqbal Baba and international footballer from Jammu, Arun Malhotra were special invitees.
