Mendhar, Sept 4: With an aim to give fillip to sports in rural areas, the Department of Youth Services and Sports alongwith Sarpanch Association of Mendhar organized a three days mega sports event ‘Mendhar Rural Sports Mela’ in remote area of Mendhar with the support of 37 Rashtriya Rifles (Punjab).
Mendhar Rural Sports Mela is a unique step to revive the traditional rural sports in this militancy affected area.
During the three days long event, popular sports like Volleyball, Kabaddi, Tug of War and local rural sports like Bhini (Baju Pakarna), Bukhdhar (Lifting heavy boulder) and Pagri Wearing Competition were conducted.
The event was inaugurated by Brig RP Singh, Commander 6 Sector Rashtriya Rifles in an impressive opening ceremony at ‘Op Hill Stadium’ Mendhar.
Eminent personalities including both civil and military dignitaries graced this occasion.
The organizers said that the event was organized to emphasize the importance of sports in the overall development of youth.
Six teams of Volleyball, eight teams of Kabaddi, four teams of Tug of War, 10 Village teams of Bhini and Bukhdhar Competition participated in the event .
Civil administration and Police extended their cooperation to make the event a success.
