JAMMU, Jan 30: Current J&K champion Sumit Grover emerged victorious at the J&K UT Chess Championship held at IDPS School, Sunjwan, remaining undefeated in all seven rounds. Pazhany Kohli secured second place, Vaibhav Dwedi third, Maxim Singh fourth and Samyak Jain fifth in the overall standings.
Category prizes were distributed across various age groups and special categories. Best Veteran prize went to Manoj Kohli, Best Woman award was bagged by Alankrita Sharma and Youngest Girl prize was won by Evisha. In age-group categories, U-15 Boys first prize went to Lakshya Sharma, U-13 Boys to Simardeep Singh, U-11 Boys to Ishaan Choudhary, U-9 Boys to Manveer Singh and U-7 Boys to Mannkaramvir Singh. Among girls, U-15 Girls best prize was awarded to Izma Fatima Bhatt, U-13 Girls to Tanisha Choudhary, U-11 Girls to Vamnah Gupta, U-9 Girls to Kiana Gupta and U-7 Girls to Hoor Fatima.
The Championship was graced by Ajit Sharma, Chief Education Officer, Jammu, who distributed trophies and cash prizes worth Rs 1 lakh to the winners. Special guests included Judicial Magistrate Kapil Dev, CEO Ramban Vikram Singh, and District Coordinator Rajiv Kumar, along with school management and chess association officials.
The event featured seven competitive rounds conducted under the Swiss system as per the latest FIDE rules, in classical format. The championship highlighted exceptional talent, strategic acumen and sportsmanship, showcasing the rising generation of chess players from J&K and promoting competitive chess across age groups.
