SAMBA, Jan 28: Bhargava Public School, Samba today organised an awareness programme on Children in Conflict with Law and Children in Need of Care and Protection with the objective of sensitising students about juvenile justice and child rights.
The programme was graced by Sub Judge Samba Assma Choudhary, who is also Secretary, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and Cheena Sumbria, Munsiff and Principal Magistrate, Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), Samba. The management, staff and students of the school were also present on the occasion.
The dignitaries were accorded a warm welcome by Chairman, Principal and staff of the school and were escorted by the NCC contingent. After lighting the ceremonial lamp, Cheena Sumbria, the resource person, highlighted the functioning of the Juvenile Justice Board and explained the care, protection, rehabilitation and support provided to children below 18 years who come in conflict with law.
Sub Judge Assma Choudhary elaborated on the rights and responsibilities of juveniles and stressed that such children are treated with care and affection, with due attention to their medical, educational and overall well-being. She added that while heinous offences are dealt with as per law, the primary aim of the juvenile justice system is reform and reintegration into society.
Earlier, students presented Saraswati Vandana, a short skit depicting the theme and a Punjabi dance. The Principal emphasised restorative justice over retributive justice, highlighting social and psychological factors leading juveniles towards crime. Chairman Rajesh Sharma thanked the dignitaries for the enlightening session and requested more such programmes in future. The proceedings were conducted by Neeru Sethi.
