DREPUNG, KARNATAKA, Jan 25: A one-month training programme aimed at imparting education in Riglam, Bhoti language, Buddhism, and ethics to 50 selected students from eleven schools across Ladakh concluded at Drepung Pethub Khangtsen, Karnataka. The programme was organised in the spirit of the Year of Compassion and as part of the celebrations marking the 90th Birth Anniversary of 14th Dalai Lama by Drepung Loseling Monastery and Pethub Khangtsen.
Geshe Stanzin Spalchhok of Drepung Loseling Monastery graced the concluding ceremony as the chief guest. On the occasion, students shared their experiences and learnings gained during the programme, which was held during their winter vacation for schools in Ladakh.
The participating students were selected from various Government and private schools of Leh through a rigorous selection process conducted after a preliminary training programme in Leh. Geshe Lobzang of Pethub Khangtsen said that the initiative has been running for the past eight years and is announced through radio and television each year.
Geshe Takpa said that the programme would continue in the future. At present, it is limited to 50 students due to infrastructure constraints but there are plans to expand it once facilities are upgraded.
Jigmet Yangchan from Ladakh Public School said she was initially hesitant when the course started but later thoroughly enjoyed it. She said the students followed a different and disciplined schedule, gaining extensive learning from experts, interactive sessions, and educational visits.
Stanzin Thekchen from Lamdon School said the programme helped develop analytical skills in addition to meditation and yoga practices. He added that students also got an opportunity to observe the lifestyle of monks and nuns in South India and witness traditional monastic debate practices. “We even got a chance to perform debates with monks and nuns,” he said.
Following the conclusion of the programme, the students will be taken on an exposure tour to Mysore, Bylakuppe, and other places in Karnataka before returning to Ladakh.
