JAMMU, Dec 25: Jammu and Kashmir’s visually impaired Para Judokas delivered a historic and record-breaking performance at the 14th Para (Visually Impaired) Judo National Championship held at Shri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, from December 19 to 23. The J&K contingent won an impressive 35 medals, including 13 gold, 13 silver and 9 bronze, and also secured two Overall winner trophies, bringing immense pride to the Union Territory.
Adding to the achievement, Riya Devi, Aliya Kousar and Anshuman Sharma were honoured with Best Judoka Awards for their exceptional performances at the national level. A total of 35 athletes from Jammu and Kashmir, including 18 boys and 17 girls, participated across Sub-Junior, Youth, Junior and Senior categories.
Among girls, medal winners included Pritika Dogra, Nisha Devi, Nigita Devi, Fitma Fyaz, Asmat Zafar Malik, Deepika Chaudhary, Lachmi Devi, Aliya Kousar, Adiba Chaudhary, Upasana Rathore, Nazia Akhtar, Riya Devi, Kajal Sharma, Bhumika Chib, Shanaz Akhter and Fiza Zohra. In the boys’ section, medal winners were Aarav Pathania, Viraj Thakur, Banti Ram, Anshuman Sharma, Mohd. Imran, Satish Kumar, Abrar Ahmed, Sourav Guleria, Ubaid-bin-Manzoor and Wasim Akram.
The entire contingent was trained under the expert guidance of Suraj Bhan Singh, Chief Judo Coach, J&K Sports Council, whose coaching and technical expertise played a decisive role in the team’s success. The team was escorted by Suhasi Kiran, Secretary of the J&K Blind and Para Judo Association, along with Shivali Rani and Punam Bala from the Sightless Residential School for Girls, Roop Nagar. Anil Kumar served as the team manager.
This historic performance stands as a landmark achievement for para sports in Jammu and Kashmir and serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes across the region.
